Authentic Mainland food is straight up “Haole food” (aka. American Food, European Food) and will usually explain what sort of cuisine it is and where it comes from. So a place that is authentically from the mainland will say that it is the name of the state or culture that is associated with or the general region if it is not from the United States of America. It can be hard to figure out if something is authentic from its region in the Americas and that depends on what goes into the dish and the development of the dish as there are many dishes that look like Haole Food, but in fact it is Hawaii Food (Hawaii-Haole Cuisine).
Some believe that all haole food is the same and that it is a problem by littering the menu landscape with foods that are from the United States and they compare it to a different cuisine in Hawaii Cuisine like Hawaiian Cuisine. But, with Hapa-Haole cuisine there is a strike in between the two of being liked by those who identified as Haoles and those identified as Hawaiians and especially those who were Hapa with a mixture of both. In history some forget that many of the chiefs had a interest in Western world and Asian world and plucked out what they believed to be the best, so they pushed for the “Great Mehele”. Bottom line, which is it? Authentic Mainland Food from the United States (American-Haole Food)? or Hawaii-Haole Food? the naming doesn’t help either, since a place in Hawaii may not even state what sort of cuisine it is or broadly have a sign that says “American” or “New American” that does not specify if it is a local variety of cuisine. Specifying Mainland food usually refers to dishes from the “United States”, which are seen are really interesting and exotic to locals, because the food that is in Hawaii is so different from another place. Each state in the mainland actually has quite a unique tale to tell with its development and people of those particular areas and it is celebrated by the flavors and the stories that come with them. From one place to another a food changes, that is why things can evolve from its place of origin. Let’s take the dish in Southern California known to Hawaii locals as “California Poke Salad” that people in California believe is a “Hawaiian Poke Bowl” from those in charge of a companies business marketing. The advertisements from the marketing office state that it is a Hawaiian Poke Bowl, but is it really? A little research on Hawaii and people find out the concept and origins are completely different. Franchises are the most famous for having authentic Haole Cuisine, such as: McDonalds (California), Burger King (Florida), Wendy’s (Ohio), Woolworth Fried Chicken (New York), Pioneer Chicken (California), and Farrell’s (Oregon). Mislabeled dishes, a California Poke Salad is part of California Cuisine and has spread to other places like the U.K. where they have British Poke Salad, but again the name Hawaiian Poke Bowl is attached, which is not accurate and misinforming its eaters to believe it is Hawaiian when it is actually British-style version of California Poke Salad. It is annoying, frustrating, and sad, because this misunderstanding makes it difficult for local businesses and people who are selling more authentic Hawaii food to make a living, due to misinformation. Many who take it personally believe it to be “cultural appropriation”. People in Hawaii really do seek out authentic experiences of mainland food, because its “Novelty” obsession Hawaii has in being almost spoiled in unique experiences of places from all over the world opening, but those that have buzz, part of a fad, a on going trend, quickly get forgotten, the test is when something sticks around in its authentic mainland food or becomes part of the ongoing menu of Hawaii-Haole Food. There are some foods that are neither authentic to the area as they are advertised as something they are not and they call themselves authentic by overstepping Hawaii cuisine and overlooking their own regional cuisine in the process like Global Poke Bowl Trend. Haole food is known for a few dishes that are flavors that are mostly specialties of areas: Canadian-style Pineapple Hamburgers (aka. Canada’s Hawaiian Burger is not from Hawaii), Canadian-style Pineapple Pizza (aka. Canada’s Hawaiian Pizza is not from Hawaii), Chicago Hot Dogs, Mission-style Burrito (California Cuisine), Green Bean casseroles, Texas Barbeque (Texas Cuisine), and Tex-mex style nachos (Tex-Mex Cuisine). While things that might be similar are the dishes and styles of Hawaii-Haole food is more regional western foods like: Hawaii Hamburgers, Hawaii-style Pizza, Hawaii Puka Dogs, Hawaii Breakfast Burrito, Imitation Krab casserole, Hawaiian Barbeque, and Kalua Pork nachos. Haole Cuisine Establishments, Haole food is centered on red meat, meanwhile Hawaii Food has many menus centered on seafood. Seafood is a staple food that has been eaten throughout most of Hawaii’s history and if you go back canoe crops were the center of Hawaiian cuisine. Many seafoods are important ingredients that make broth and dried powders for flavoring and can be used to make things more delicious. For Hawaii food, taking a portable plate-lunch or a plate and use a fork or chopsticks and find a nice place to eat and get immersed in the food eating experience. But for Haole cuisine the main experience comes from the destination and less portable or flexible eating style and sticks to its own techniques, methods, stories, and history. In Modern Hawaii there are cooks who have been trained in Western establishments or from places in the West to obtain knowledge to make very authentic dishes from all over the world and have their own respective categories or subcategories of their trained cuisine. Based on such authentic foods are the basis of the promotion and eating habits brought over to help develop the change the always evolving world of Hawaii-Haole cuisine and food culture in Hawaii. Haole Cuisine is to bring the mainland to Hawaii and Hawaii-Haole is bringing foods from Hawaii culture of Western influenced foods that suit the tastes of Local people to the mainland
