Bowls in Hawaii are used in many ways and in many places, including in both homes and the restaurants. The local residents use bowls in a multitude of ways and different sizes of small medium and large.,There is always another reason to use bowl, and it can range from a variety of dishes, including: soups, noodle soups, rice and stews or sauce, or a ethnic specialty that happens to feature a bowl. Bowls are in the blood of Hawaii cuisine, since the Hawaiian people even had their own bowl called the umeke.
Umeke (literally. Bowl in Hawaiian) in Hawaii it was originally used in ancient hawaii for the common use of holding all sorts of foods. With the phrase Umeke Bowl it can become quite confusing it its literal translation being "Bowl Bowl". A dish that is usually still using the Umeke title is the Poi Bowl or Poi Umeke depending on preference. The word “Umeke” as its meaning of bowl is used as a differentiator of bowl dishes for cultural identity. The common bowls that are around the state of Hawaii would be the Poi Bowl, Loco Moco Bowl, Sushi Bowl, Fruit Bowl, Granola Bowl, and Poke Bowl, all of which can exchange the word Bowl with Umeke. The bowl may seem like a new concept it really is a slice out of the home recipe book of putting rice in a bowl with left overs. People have been buying affordable ground beef and making gravy and eggs for a long time, people have been throwing poke on rice with some sauce for a long time, and people had always been eating poi in a bowl since forevers. When all the names and all the categories did not exist people would refer to eating in a bowl as just that “hey, i'll eat whatevers left. Let me get a bowl.” Things were a lot simpler in the olden days. But food keeps moving forward and more variety has been brought to the Hawaii bowl. The most used bowl is a large bowl for entire meals. This could be a Saimin bowl of the olden days or imported Ramen bowls from the Japanese Markets. A particular seller of such bowls was Marukai, which would also sell instant saimin that people could leave in their freezers and heat up on a day they were hungry for noodles. The bowls were wide and large with a chinese peacock and dragon design on the inside and were common of saimin stands back in the day. These iconic bowls would end up inspiring many handmade saimin bowls and the idea of making a bowl that Hawaii could call its own. Many cultures have their own bowl foods, however none other stick out as much as the influence from Japan with the Donburi. At local markets, convenience stores, and Japanese Restaurants all over the islands is sure to have a large range of Donburi. Those that have stayed strong as island favorites are the: Oyako Donburi and Katsu Donburi. The dishes of old carry the message to stretch the rice with a flavoring agent, a whole meal in a bowl, and convenience. All lessons that people who live in Hawaii can relate with, due to the on the go lifestyle. Many ethnic dishes from different cultures have their own bowl dishes. While eating in a bowl might be local, it is also international. Taking dishes into consideration is a lesson learned from the Donburi. Japanese are said to have characteristics of their eateries by being very simple and direct in their message of a specialty through both menu items and design of their dishes. While in America a place may need a slight variation of menu items the attraction of several dishes are still the stars that bring in the customer's time and time again while having an equal effect of specialty dishes. While there are some points which are different and some that are the same. It can’t be ignored that the attention of the dish that pays attention to eating performance, food portions, and appearance has a profound effect. At first sight it brings a heightened awareness of what the person is about to eat by absorbing a full experience by taking into account whatever touches the food. Regardless of the geographic location of the eatery the dishes are important and is said to be one of the upper hands ramen establishments use to gain the upperhand in appearance against local Saimin shops. The appearance of the large bowls have largely stayed the same as time has gone on. While each large bowl that has time and care taken into its design and use it then starts to own a personality and feeling from its colors and shape. The food that in it will shine ever more and the branding in the venue will be well reflected for its attention to detail of how it matches with everything else. The customer will be amazed from its elegance, especially if all the plates are taken into consideration in this manner by taking the concept of unique bowls. While a bowl may seem just like an ordinary dish it is important to know the shapes effects on what sort of meal the dish is designed to hold. Bowls that are specially designed are created from hearing restaurant owners ideas and understanding their particular challenges of serving particular foods. For example a bowl for saimin will be a bit wider as well has having depth, while a bowl for rice with sauce and food toppings the shape might be a bit higher to hold all the food with a sturdy base that would befitting of any bowl that is filled with delicious food, or a soup bowl would have a raised bottom for ease of pouring and consumption of the customer. There are many ways to make shapes effect to be useful for the user and have a positive impact on the businesses by having added to the customer's unique experience with such dishes. Pottery is definitely a thing in Hawaii! there are skilled potters around the island with many schools teaching the arts of using the potters wheel and sculpting with painting techniques to boot. For more information on Hawaii's bowl makers its important to check out the "Hawaii Potters Guild" or the "Empty Bowl Hawaii" project. Hawaii has an opportunity with its own pottery and woodworks with a large specialization on bowls. While costs of making things is high in Hawaii in comparison to overseas the demand is certainly there with places around the world willing to pay more for a made in Hawaii label and something that design wise is unique of the islands personality. The reason for this is the expanded interest of people who may want art pieces for their house, bowls for their restaurant, or a bowl for home. When some place specialized in just cups, bowls, and dishes of similar shape it makes it easier for the client to know what exactly is to be expected of the shop, instead of making every type of dish. It is also quick to become known and the fastest way to become the best. The reason being, since the battle of the bowl makers is mostly local and made in hawaii, if they are the best in Hawaii they can become the best in the world at making Hawaii Umeke Bowls.
