A tasty plate lunch dish that is great in the morning with its rice with gravy with a bit of leftovers and two eggs on top any style. While not limited to the morning, or lunch, or dinner, or a plate, the loco moco is eaten at all times of the day. While rather tasty with its gravy and rice with additional foods the loco moco bowl is by no means healthy. In the form of a bowl the Loco Moco standard sized bowl has two scoops rice, one large burger patty, and two eggs, gravy all over. A large bowl has three scoops rice, two large hamburger patties, two eggs, and gravy all over.
Loco Moco is most known as a plate lunch island favorite. Many residents are familiar with it for its availability at eateries and its ease to make at home. Loco Moco come in a variety of styles as a plate, but, when people aren't eating out and have the island favorite at home its usually in a bowl. The Legendary food institution of Ken’s House of Pancakes on Hilo has been jammin since 1971 with an assortment of loco moco bowls: The Original, Keiki Moco, Spam Moco, Mahi Moco, Teri Beef Moco, Corned Beef Hash Moco, Chili Cheese Moco, Pocho Moco, Kailua Moco, Chorizo Moco, and the Sumo Moco. Why would any of this matter for a Loco Moco bowl? It just so happens that the Big Island has many treasures on its land. Cafe 100 made the Loco Moco and Ken’s is best known for serving it up in a bowl, like the good old days. While many people who live in Hawaii and use bowls for their Loco Mocos, not a lot of people outside of Hawaii know that it's commonly served up in a bowl and the only image in their minds is the whole plate lunch. It gives a real inside scoop on how people in Hawaii eat their gravy like and stew like foods. With options of eggs on top of almost anything and gravy loco moco in a bowl is commonly made in Hawaii homes that have someone who cooks. Even though people can get a better loco moco from the plate lunch joint...it's a lot more comfy to just eat one at home in a bowl. That is why places that still serve Loco Mocos in a bowl hit that comfort food feeling and are found in neighborhood restaurants that want to evoke that feeling. Many Hawaii homes have bowls, in particular large bowls like Saimin Bowls. Hawaii life is full of long working days and very busy family schedules of meetings, activities, and celebrations, so eating in bowls helps for quick meals that have stew like sauces sink to the bottom of the dish. Some people eat loco mocos in a bowl with a fork and many a spoon, but either way the dish makes it easy to quickly consume the food. Loco Moco is not a very hard dish to make and is one of the reasons it's a home staple. With a home variation being a Loco Moco in bowl adds to the convenience as well as the speed of both eating the food and washing the dishes. It also keeps all the food from getting anywhere other than the bowl. What is also attractive is throwing out the side dishes that are always served in a Loco Moco plate lunch, like macaroni salad. It's a dish that can be thrown in the microwave when pre made and be a quick way to serve a meal. Being in Hawaii, many families buy bulk, so making plenty of patties, cooking them, and tossing them in the freezer for reheating is a big deal. Also, because the brown gravy from the hamburger fat eventually runs out it's a big thing to use premade gravies that made cream of mushroom soup a big star and pantry necessity. As far as still being in a bowl, most establishments on Oahu have forgone the bowl entirely. Loco Mocos are dressed up loco mocos as a featured entree that contain multiple toppings and fancy sauces that would take the average joe hours to make. While there are many Loco Mocos that are defined from their combination and even more varieties defined from its gravies it is best to stick with the idea of loco moco in a bowl. The variety that luckily is still featured at a few restaurants is the Loco Moco bowl to show a place is wanting the customer to feel comfort style home food feel. While other bowls maybe gaining in popularity the Loco Moco bowl is far from being forgotten as it will be continually made in Hawaii homes for its ease and comfort.
